On April 17, 2024 at 12:00 at the Olympic Preparation Center “Giulio Onesti” in Rome, within the CONI National Board works no. 1148, the Gold Medal for Athletic Valor has been assigned to the members of the crew of “Il Moro di Venezia”, winners of the 1991 America’s Cup Class World Championship and the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup.
The assignment was supported by the Italian Sailing Federation FIV, represented by its President Francesco Ettorre, who proposed to the Competent Authorities of the CONI, and specifically to the President, Giovanni Malagò, the bestowal of this honor in relation to the prestigious results achieved in ’91 and ’92 at the America’s Cup in San Diego (USA).
The “Moro di Venezia” can be considered a founding part of Italian sports history as with its owner Raul Gardini and with a high-level team of technicians and sailors they managed to bring Italian sailing and in particular the America’s Cup class to the highest levels.
An extraordinary result that today, more than thirty years later, is recognized by CONI which awards the medal for athletic valor to that group of men who made possible not only that feat but who, from that moment on, represented the icon of Italian Sailing in the World, giving boost to the development of a wonderful sport.
